How a crew member survived the Colombian plane crash

A crew member who is one of just six survivors from the Colombian plane crash said he’s only alive because he curled up like a baby in the moments before the aircraft slammed to the ground.

Erwin Tumiri described the harrowing last few minutes of the fateful LaMia Flight 2933 as it plummeted thousands of feet.

“I put the bags in between my legs to form the fetal position that is recommended in accidents,” he told Fox Sports Argentina.

He said curling up into a little ball and bracing for impact saved his life.

But Tumiri said many other passengers were either unaware or unable to follow the safety protocol.

“During the situation, many stood up from their seats and they started to shout,” he said.

The Monday crash killed 71 of the 77 people aboard the plane — many of whom were members of the Chapecoense soccer team, which was heading to Medellin for a tournament that was scheduled to start Wednesday.
