A GERMAN railway has sparked controversy after it revealed plans to launch a women and children only carriage on its trains.

The German Regiobahn line made the announcement revealing it the launch of the new compartment on its Leipzig and Chemnitz trains, in east Germany.

However, the decision to only admit women and children in one section of the train has caused a stir in the European country.

Germany will join India, Mexico, Brazil, Egypt and Indonesia as a select few countries that have segregated carriages for women and children.

The special carriage will be will by next to the customer service section, according to Breitbart London.

A spokesman for the railway said: “The local proximity to the customer service representative is chosen deliberately.”

The news comes following the sex attacks in Germany on New Year’s Eve, allegedly carried out by dozens of migrants.

The shocking list of crimes reported in the German city of Cologne ran to a staggering 821 complaints, including sexual assaults and gang rape.

But the railway has denied its new measure has anything to do with the sexual attacks across Germany on New Year’s eve.

In August last year Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn suggested women should be segregated to curb sexual harassment on public transport.

The left-wing MP promised to look into the idea as a potential policy proposal in the build up to the Labour leadership election last year.

He said: “Some women have raised with me that a solution to the rise in assault and harassment on public transport could be to introduce women-only carriages.

“I would consult with women and open it up to hear their views on whether women-only carriages would be welcome – and if piloting this at times and on modes of transport where harassment is reported most frequently would be of interest.”
