The coach was attacked as the Red Devils tried to reach Upton Park to play the Hammers in the last match at their famous grounds.

Bottles were thrown towards the United bus and players refused to get off into the street.

Kick-off has been delayed until 8.30pm and Metropolitan Police officers are at the scene.

A police officer and a member of the public suffered minor injuries, a spokesman for Scotland Yard said, adding that no-one had been arrested.

A spokesman said: "An appropriate policing plan is in place."

United boss Louis van Gaal said the incident was "not so nice".

He said: "It is not the first time I have seen that. It is not so nice. The way we have been received is not the proper way, of course. That makes all the influence on the players and that is a pity."

United captain Wayne Rooney told Sky Sports: "It wasn't nice. The coach got smashed up, but we are here now. I'm sure you'll see the images.

"It's not for me to say, but it was disappointing of course. It's a big night for West Ham, but I'm sure West Ham as a club will be disappointed with what the fans have done."

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan said he was disappointed that fans would be delayed.
