A teenager has been banned from driving for a year after her parents called police to tell them she had been drink driving.

Shannon Downie, 18, had got behind the wheel after a night out in Aberdeen to give a friend a lift home despite getting a taxi back to her own house easier in the night.

Her parents witnessed what happened and were so ‘disgusted’ they called police, who after pulling her over found she was more than three times the limit, reports the Daily Record.

Downie appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Friday where she pleaded guilty to drink driving on December 2, was banned for a year and fined £400.

Her solicitor, Liam McAllister, told the court: ‘It was her own family who contacted the police in the first place, as they were so disgusted that she had acted in this way.

‘She offers no explanation as to why she made this ridiculous decision. To say she is ashamed of her conduct is an understatement.’

Sentencing the teenager, Sheriff Christine McCrossan said she had found herself in a ‘highly unusual set of circumstances’, the Press and Journal reported.

She said: ‘If your own family has brought this matter to the attention of the police then I am sure you are aware, as they are, how unacceptable this is in terms of public safety.’
