Alexander Hug of OSCE tells UT about MH17 crash site access last year

Ukraine Today talks with Alexander Hug, OSCE deputy chief monitor, who recalls last year's tragedy surrounding the downing of MH17. 

OSCE Special Monitoring Mission was the first international mission to arrive at the Malaysian Airline crash site last year with Alexander Hug heading the team of the observers.

"We were welcomed by a group of heavily armed rebels, we were not welcomed nicely, and we only could spend a few minutes, half an hour on the first day, on that stretch of approximately 150 meters of the famous road that led through the crash site. 

At these very moments we saw, apart from the debris lying across the field, some of the deceased that were lying there.

During the first days the access (to the crash site) was very limited".

This was a territory controlled by the so called DPR (Donetsk People's Republic), we had to negotiate with them to get our access."
