Aloha, summer! Snowstorm hits Hawaiian volcano (TIMELAPSE)

A thunderstorm at Hawaii’s Mauna Kea volcano dropped 1½ to 2 inches (5.8cm) of snow on its summit on Friday.

Cameras at Kea’s summit caught the event, which usually occurs in the winter months, according to Mauna Kea forecast meteorologist Ryan Lyman. Friday’s snowfall came as a thunderstorm lifted high into the atmosphere, far above the volcano’s summit of nearly 14,000 feet (4,267 meters).

 The storm combined with the freezing overnight temperatures led to the unusual phenomenon.
