Ringo Starr’s first Ludwig drum kit sells at auction for $2.2 million

Well you can't buy love, but you can buy The Beatles's old gear — for a price.

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay won the bid for Ringo Starr's first Ludwig drum kit for $2.2 million from Julien's Auctions in Santa Barbara, Calif. this week. The kit was used in more than 200 live performances and was used to record some of The Beatles's early hits like "Can't Buy Me Love" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand."

"Look at the size of it, Starr said recently while sitting behind the kit. "I mean I wanted it to be small because I wanted it to make me look big."

According to Martin Nolan, Executive Director of Julien's Auctions, the legendary kit has been out of the public eye for 50 years.

But Starr wasn't the only Beatle to smash the skins on this kit, the drums were also used to record Pul McCartney's first solo record titled McCartney.

Irsay is a huge music fan and an avid collector of music gear, including over 30 famous guitars, some of which were used by Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia and Eric Clapton.

Isray also owns guitars from the other three members of The Beatles, Paul McCartney, the late George Harrison and the late John Lennon.
