How to take the best photos

• Always be aware of the light direction; it hugely affects the “look” of the image.
•  Patience pays – wait for the light to change, for best effect.
• Use the “Golden Hour”, leading to sunset, for magical lighting.
• Keep shooting in the “Blue Zone”, up to an hour after sunset, for a different look.
• Rise early for sunrise, one of the most pleasing lights for landscape photography.
• Everything in-frame has an effect; if it doesn’t add to the image, leave it out.
• Include “leading lines” – vertical, horizontal or “S” lines – that draw the viewer’s eye.
• Experiment with high and low angles, dramatically affecting composition.
• Kit? “You can take a decent landscape picture with a smartphone,” says Roy (rjm photography.com). “But if you want the best image by controlling depth of field and light, buy a manual SLR, starting from around £300. Then spend on a tripod. It gives you time to think, allows longer exposures and aids great composition.”

Best “starter” lens? One that covers from wide angle to telephoto.
