‘We are not afraid’: Jakarta residents stage anti-ISIS rally as attack death toll rises to 8

People in Jakarta have staged a rally in defiance of Islamic State at the site of the deadly attack for which the extremist group claimed responsibility. The death toll from the attack has grown to eight.

Crowds gathered on Sunday at the site of the attack, carrying banners that read: “I am Muslim and I am against jihad terrorists,” and “We are not afraid” (the phrase in Indonesian #KamiTidakTakut has been trending on Twitter).

Rally participants chanted that they are ready to fight the “IS cowards.”

The rally came as another person injured in Thursday's militant attack died, raising the death toll to eight, including three civilians.

"The victim was an employee of a branch of Bangkok Bank nearby," Jakarta police spokeswoman Yulia Hutasuhut told Reuters on Sunday.

At least 30 people were injured in the suicide bombing and shootout, which took place near a downtown Starbucks coffee shop.

Islamic State (IS, previously ISIS/ISIL) has claimed responsibility for the terror attack. Twelve suspects were detained in relation with the assault, and there is evidence that the group was planning further attacks in Bandung city. Police believe that the mastermind behind the assault is an Indonesian national, Bahrun Naim, living in Syria, who allegedly sent thousands of dollars to Indonesian bank accounts to finance the attack.
