Headteacher blasts parents who wear pyjamas and slippers while dropping kids off at school

Teacher Kate Chisholm requests that parents take the time to dress appropriately in day wear which is suitable for the weather conditions

Parents who take their kids on the school run while wearing their pyjamas have been given short shrift by a disgruntled head teacher.

Kate Chisholm, of Skerne Park Primary, has written to families and carers of youngsters at the school in Darlington.

Her letter states that she has "noticed an increasing tendency for parents to escort children while still wearing their pyjamas and, on occasion, even slippers".

The teacher requests that parents take the time to dress appropriately in day wear which is suitable for the weather conditions.

Ms Chisholm adds that it is important to set a good example to pupils about what is appropriate, reports the Gazette.

She explained: "We want the very best for our children and we do feel that parents turning up in their pyjamas to bring their children to school or for school meetings are setting a bad example to our children.

"It is not a judgement on the parents — who they are or how they are — we just feel we get the children to come in uniform because we like to be role models and that parents should be the same."

The head teacher added: "We have had a lot of positive reaction — one parent said it was an amazing letter.

"I would just say that it is a core number of parents — generally the parents of our school are very supportive and are fantastic.

"It is just a small minority turning up in their pyjamas — but that is still too many in my eyes."

Skerne Park parent Phil Naylor told the Gazette: "I'm all for it myself the school are doing right by the kids and trying to show them the right path.

"There should be a law against it. People have a lack of self respect to not even get dressed on a morning."

Five years ago, parents and carers in Middlesbrough were also requested to stop wearing pyjamas on the school run.

Head teachers across 11 schools requested that mums and dads show decency and respect when attending school premises.

The 11 primary schools which form the east Middlesbrough cluster — North Ormesby, St Alphonsus, Berwick Hills, St Pius, Park End, Pallister Park, Pennyman, Thorntree, Corpus Christi, Brambles Farm and Caldicotes — agreed on the policy.
