PARIS terrorist Salah Abdeslam has been caught alive in a massive terror raid by Belgian police.

Europe's most wanted man was wounded and arrested by Belgian authorities after a dramatic raid in the Brussels district of Molenbeek, Belgian prosecutors have confirmed.

Two men were shot, one of which is Abdeslam, who has been on the run since the atrocities committed in the French capital in November last year.

The two men are believed to have fled the scene of a raid that took place earlier this week in the Brussels distrcit of Forest, before taking refuge in Molenbeek.

Abdeslam was shot in the leg and arrested by police when officers moved in on a flat, said Belgian authorities.

The Belgian national, who had been on the run for four months, slipped through the fingers of French and Belgian police on numerous occasions since the Paris attacks on November 13 last year.

The anti terror operation is still underway in Molenbeek. A second man, Soutane Kayal, was arrested with Abdeslam and a third man may still be in the Brussels flat raided earlier this evening.

Kayal is said to be linked to Mohamed Belkaid, the Algerian shot dead in the police raid in Brussels on Tuesday.

Two large explosions, believed to have been caused by grenades, have been heard in the Brussels suburb.

Tense scenes have broken out between locals and the police, with some young people reportedly praising their “hero” Abdeslam, according to local media.

Some people reportedly threw missiles at riot police in the road where the raid took place.

Theo Francken, a Belgian minister, confirmed the capture of Abdeslam by tweeting "We got him" in Flemish.

Belgian intelligence services had been watching the apartment in Molenbeek for two days before swooping in, according to police sources.

The Belgian army also attended the scene on Rue des Quatre-vents, where 10 shots were heard and police used grenades before special forces entered the property in Molenbeek.

At least two terror operations took place in the Belgian capital of Brussels on Friday afternoon.

Molenbeek, Abdeslam’s hometown, has come under great scrutiny after it was revealed the Paris terrorists used the Brussels district as a base for plotting the deadly atrocities in the French capital.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel has left the European Union (EU) summit in Brussels to attend the scene in Molenbeek.

The development comes after Belgian prosecutors confirmed Abdeslam’s fingerprints were found in an apartment in the Brussels district where a shoot-out took place earlier this week.

An Algerian man killed in the earlier shoot-out played a role in organising the Paris attacks, Belgian authorities have confirmed.

Two men, of which is believed to have been Abdeslam, managed to flee the scene in the Brussels district of Forest.

The Belgian national became the most wanted man in Europe after carrying out terrorist attacks in which 130 people were killed by Islamic State (ISIS) jihadis on November 13.

Mr Michel has tweeted a photo showing a meeting with French President François Hollande and Belgian intelligence services after the raid.

The French and Belgian leaders will hold a press conference at 8.30pm local time.

Abdeslam is believed to have returned to Belgium immediately after the Paris attacks, in which his brother Brahim blew himself up.

French and Belgian officials have identified most of the people they believed carried out the deadly atrocities in the French capital.

Most of the suspects either died during the attacks or were killed in subsequent police raids.

Brussels, where a number of the suspected attackers lived, has under lockdown for days after the Paris massacre.
