The body of Shaylyn Ammerman, a 1-year-old Spencer girl who was last seen sometime before 9 a.m. Wednesday, was found Thursday, Indiana State Police confirmed.

The toddler's body was found just after 6 p.m. in a wooded area northeast of Gosport, a release from State Police said.

Investigators were led to a remote area of private property, where Indiana Creek meets the White River, after "interviewing persons of interest" in the case, State Police Sgt. Curt Durnil said Thursday night.

Kyle Parker, 22, of Spencer, was arrested and was being held in connection with Shaylyn's death, the release said.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday, the release said. Positive identification and cause of death will be determined by the Owen County coroner’s office. Crime scene investigators were processing the scene where the toddler's body was discovered.

Sharylyn's grandmother, Tamera Morgan, said she put the child to bed in her home in the 400 block of West Jefferson Street in Spencer around 8 p.m. Tuesday. She said she continuously checked on the child until about 1:30 a.m. Then she went to bed.

Shaylyn's father, Justin Ammerman, was in the home that night, along with his brother, father and a friend, Morgan said.

On Wednesday morning, Tamera Morgan said her son woke her, yelling to see if she had her 1-year-old granddaughter.

"He yelled, 'Mom, do you have Shaylyn?'" Morgan said. "I said, 'Of course, I do not have her.

"I went directly to her bed. It was empty."

On Thursday Ammerman took a polygraph test in Indianapolis, Morgan said. She said her son wouldn't hurt his daughter.

"The only explanation is that someone came in and took her," Morgan said. She said the door was unlocked that night.
