A HUGE operation is underway in Amsterdam after a bomb threat forced an airport to be evacuated and closed.

Amsterdam's Schiphol airport and the Sheraton Hotel next door were emptied because of a "suspicious situation".

One man was arrested at the airport and a second was arrested at a major train station in the city.

Hundreds of people and armed police officers could be seen crowded outside the airport shortly after 9.30pm local time.

A bomb disposal robot was pictured at the airport at around 11pm after a "suspicious package" was found.

The terrifying scenes followed a flight to Glasgow reporting a mid-air emergency.

Local media sources reported that a police helicopter was circling the airport and that masked officers had cordoned off an area around it.

One Twitter user worryingly referred to the situation as a "terrorism" threat.

She wrote: "S*** just got real. There is a high terrorism threat at Schiphol Amsterdam airport. That's exactly where I am right now."

Police spokesman Alfred Ellwanger said an area around the airport where buses stop was being searched.

Mr Ellwanger also confirmed that a man was arrested earlier in the night.
