THE OBSESSION with matching black orphans with families of the same race left the children "languishing in care", according to a equalities' champion Trevor Phillips.

In a hard hitting interview on for Radio Four programme, Why I Changed My Mind, Trevor Phillips talked about his deep regret in not confronting the racial matching issue.

The controversial theory considers a child’s ethnic and religious background when placing them in adoption.

Mr Phillips said it was a concept used by most local authorities during his reign at the watchdog and approved of by his 'lefty' friends at the time.

However, as a result of there being more white families than black families, Mr Phillips said “the orphanages were stacked up with black kids who weren’t being adopted".

It is a thing that is on my conscious and will stay there

He criticised the mindset that it was worse for a child to be adopted by a white family than to “languish in care”.

Mr Phillips highlighted the issues with being in care and how it can lead to a downward spiral, including issues with drugs, failure of education and unemployment.

Mr Phillips said: “I could have ordered an investigation of the topic and I would have shown that it was better for the children to be with any family, by and large, than to stay in these homes."

Sounding emotional, he added: “It will always stick to me that I didn’t because I was persuaded by people that it would be another attack on black people.”

He admitted that the policy regarding the issue has improved, but he confessed to feeling concerned about allowing children to stay in care when they should have been with loving families.

He said: “It is a thing that is on my conscious and will stay there.”

In the same interview, Mr Phillips said that we must stop fearing offending minority groups.
