Hollway Road was cordoned off due to a "police incident".
Cops were seen shouting "stand back" to all anxious pedestrians standing in the area.
London Overground tweeted: "No service between Highbury & Islington & Dalston Junction due to a security alert at Highbury & Islington."
The bus involved in the incident was reportedly a 271 service to Moorgate.
Metropolitan Police have since confirmed the evacuation took place due to an abandoned suitcase on a bus.
Specialist officers examined it as a "precaution".
A statement from the Met read: "Police in Hackney were called to Holloway Road, Highbury and Islington at 08:39hrs on Wednesday, 11 May following reports of an item of unattended luggage onboard a route 271 Transport for London bus.
"Specialist officers attended. Cordons were put in place as a precaution whilst the item was assessed.
"It has since transpired that the abandoned suitcase was non-suspicious."
TfL confirmed Holloway Road has now been opened and cleared.
