A small biplane crashed Saturday afternoon during a performance at an air show in suburban Atlanta, killing the pilot, authorities say.
DeKalb County Public Information Officer Sheira Campbell says the pilot crashed and died while flying in tandem with another plane during an aerial acrobatics stunt at the Good Neighbor Day Open House Airshow at DeKalb Peachtree Airport, about 11 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.
The pilot’s identification was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Campbell says there were no other injuries on the ground and there was no other damage other than to the aircraft.
The cause of the crash is unknown. Airport officials say the weather was clear at the time.
Interim DeKalb County CEO Lee May called the crash a tragedy.
"A tragedy occurred as professional pilots entertained and educated thousands today," he said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the pilot who lost his life."
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration were both on the scene and investigating.
