While teeing off on No. 15 at Muirfield Village at the 2016 Memorial on Thursday, Phil Mickelson found the rough in a most peculiar fashion.
He hit a ball off a marshal’s head. Here’s what went through Mickelson’s head when he saw what happened Steve DiMeglio:
“I saw the ball shoot across the fairway, but usually when you hit somebody, you’ll see people congregate. So I thought maybe it hit a cart or hit something else, but it hit this guy in the head,” Mickelson said. “He looked like Ali taking hits because he didn’t go down. He didn’t go down at all. He was just laughing about it. Yeah, no big deal. Hit me in the head. And the ball went shooting across the fairway from the right rough into the left rough. I don’t know how it did. He was smiling. That was impressive.”
Lefty joked that if the volunteer’s head was softer, his shot might have stayed in the fairway. He then signed a glove “I’m so sorry” with a frowny face in one “O.” The marshal, thank goodness, appeared to be okay.
