Pensioner ‘prescribed’ prostitute says brothels should be legalised

A PENSIONER who was “prescribed” prostitutes by his GP is calling on police to stop raiding brothels.

The unnamed 79-year-old is a supporter of legal brothels after visiting his doctor when he lived in Spain over problems in the bedroom with his wife.

He claims they advised him to frequent one of the six legal brothels in Spain.

The man, who has since moved back to the UK, said: “I am quite large and my wife is quite small so I went to the doctor and he told me to use one of the six legal brothels in Spain where we lived.

“My wife was quite happy for me to do this. It's just common sense.

“The women in Spain who don't want to have babies or have gone off sex drive their men to brothels and wait for them so that they don't go drinking afterwards.

"I can't understand why we are so against this sort of thing in the UK. It stops men running around harassing women and even becoming violent to women.

“It is a profession and they are doing a service to the community."

He has vocalised his support for local establishments, calling on Cambridge police to “lay off” raiding brothels.

His controversial views have received backing from Dr Belinda Brooks-Gordon, an expert in sex industry law.

She said: “There is no question that the evidence shows sex workers are safer working together in collectives or in premises where they can rely on others.

“At present, when sex workers in the UK contact the police, they are often worried that they will be prosecuted themselves and prevented from working.”

The pensioner’s views were broadly supported by readers of his local paper, where he wrote numerous letters on the subject.

One reader replied: “Why should they not be licensed with the local authority in order to trade legitimately in the same way as trades such as those selling alcohol and, which in turn would lead to more efficient monitoring legitimately by whoever it concerned such as the police to enforce trafficking laws and Inland Revenue regarding the paying of taxes as each 'worker' would be a registered employee of that brothel."
