Singer Alejandro Fuentes-Rosas, who appeared on Mexico's "The Voice," has died after he was shot in Chicago.

The singer was shot on his birthday Thursday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Fuentes-Rosas, 45, suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died Saturday, the Chicago Police said in a statement.

A man approached the singer on foot, displayed a handgun and ordered him out of the car, police said.

The victim resisted and the gunman fired several rounds, striking him in the head, police said.

The attacker ran a short distance on foot then got into a car and fled, police said.

Fuentes-Rosas was on Mexico's "The Voice" in 2011.

The shooting was on the same street where the Chicago resident was president of a music instruction school.

No arrests have been made.

His killing comes a week after another former "Voice" contestant, Christina Grimmie, was shot dead following a performance in Orlando, Florida.

Grimmie, 22, rose to fame on the U.S. version of the show, which airs on NBC.
