A gunman is dead after an incident at a German movie theater in the town of Viernheim, a spokesman for German police in the state of Hesse told ABC News. No one was injured by the gunman, the spokesman said.
German media have reported, however, that some individuals were injured in the incident, possibly from teargas police deployed when entering the theater. Peter Beuth, Hesse's minister of the interior, said police stormed the theater in a large-scale operation, including special forces flown in by choppers.
The incident started this afternoon when a man armed with a gun entered the theater in Viernheim, which is about 45 miles south of Frankfurt, said Beuth.
The gunman was shot dead shortly before 5 p.m. local time, Beuth said. The gunman's motive was not immediately clear, Beuth said.
Earlier today New York City police officers were sent to movie theaters in New York as a precaution, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said. The NYPD is now standing down, according to John Miller, NYPD's deputy commissioner.
