SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has announced it is slashing opening hours in dozens of stores up and down the country with more than 1,000 people facing redundancy.
The chain is scrapping 24-hour opening times in 20 stores in a bid to stem the haemorrhaging of profits.
Some 1,750 staff could lose their jobs as a result of the changes, with a 45 day consultation period kicking in for affected workers.

The majority of affected staff are overnight workers, who predominately stack shelves, and some customer service roles.
In total 48 stores will see changes introduced, 46 of which will shift from overnight re-stocking to evening re-stocking.
Of the 20 stores which will cease to be open 24-hours, they will most likely move to to 6am-midnight opening time.
Some customer service desks will be merged in a further bid to cut costs, with those workers also facing an uncertain future.
Tony Hoggett, Tesco UK COO, said: “We’re making some changes to the way a small number of our stores operate to help us run them more simply and deliver the best possible service to customers.
“Where there have been changes to a colleague’s role we will work with them to ensure they are fully supported.”
The changes are expected to be implemented mid-August.
The move comes soon after the shopping giant announced 76 stores would no longer be open in the small hours, as part of their plan to turnaround declining sales.
They added that 300 of their stores will still be open 24-hours a day.
