THE EXECUTIONER OF EUROPE: Greece blasts German finance minister over secret Brexit plan

GERMAN finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble has been mocked as the 'Mad Executioner of Europe' after Britain's vote to Leave the EU.

His hardline approach to the Athens financial crisis a year ago turned him into a real figure of hate in Greece.

And now Greek newspaper Demokratia has poured scorn on him once again after it emerged he had secretly drawn up a plan while Britain prepared for the EU referendum.

Under the headline 'Schäuble above everything else' the newspaper printed a caricature of him with executioner's hood and medieval double-bladed axe. 

The caption said: "The Executioner of Europe has gone mad." 

Mr Schäuble reportedly wants a treaty between the EU and the UK covering trading rules and other regulations that would “not offer too much leeway to Britain in gaining access to the EU's internal market”.

The document is called “German strategy regarding Brexit” and details how the German government wants to deal with Britain as it leaves the EU.

It says to deter other European countries from leaving the bloc, the EU "should refrain from setting wrong incentives for other member states when renegotiating relations."

But according to Demokratia, Mr Schauble also wants Brexit to spark wide ranging reform which it claims will effectively get rid of the EU Commission and introduce a new body to oversee debts, stability and growth which would have powers to reject member states' budget plans.

The paper suggests Berlin would have the final say on the financial plans of all countries within the eurozone.
