Britain’s decision to leave EU is in danger of being WATERED DOWN by ‘Europhile fanatics’

BRITAIN’S momentous decision to break away from the European Union could be WATERED DOWN by “pro-EU fanatics” who will not fight for the future the UK, Leave campaigners have warned.

Britain’s Leave camp issued the stark warning as they revealed that the Government’s team responsible for the nation’s Brexit will actually be led by the same Europhiles behind David Cameron’s disastrous renegotiation plans.

In spite of the nation calling for the UK to sever ties with Europe following last week’s momentous referendum, Brexit campaigners say the Remain camp could still have a chance of getting their way.

Ukip MP Douglas Carswell said: “There is a real danger that the Sir Humphreys will derail Brexit, which represents the will of the people.”

Leave campaigner Daniel Hannan MEP told the Mail Online:“This is the whole reason we’re in this mess. The Sir Humphreys aren’t going to get the best deal for the UK.

“They are incurable Europhiles and all they want is to try to keep the EU project together. After the palpable failure of the supposed renegotiation with Brussels, its beyond ludicrous to put the same people in charge of our Brexit negotiations.”

It comes as Brexit-backer Andrea Leadsom took an early swipe at Tory rival Theresa May by claiming she should not be leader as she does not believe in severing ties with Europe.

Eurosceptic Tory MEP David Cambell Bannerman added:  “I fear the civil service has become an agency of the EU. Many officials regard their jobs as enabling the EU in the UK, rather than representing the UK in Europe. “We will have to have radical surgery of certain civil servants who are too much part of the European project.”

The Brexit line up is expected to be announced later this week and so far Oliver Robbins, in charge of immigration policy at the Home Office, has been appointed to head up the new unit.

Mr Carswell blasted the line up of EU mandarins as “Project Fear giving way to Project Backsliding”.

He added: “Clearly, the establishment is doing everything it can to dilute what Leave means.

“The Foreign Office is irredeemably federalist. Their main agenda is not to get the best deal for the UK, but to get themselves back to the top table in Brussels.

“We can't possibly entrust this process to the same civil servants that have been tangled up in this mess for the last 40 years.”

Another official tipped to join the Brexit unit is Sir Evan Rogers, the nation’s ambassador to the EU, formally private secretary to pro-EU supporters Tony Blair and Kenneth Clarke, and Tom Scholar, a former aide of Gordon Brown. Mr Scholar, 47, played a key role in delivering Mr Cameron’s renegotitation deal with Brussels.

Labour MPs including Yvette Cooper, Stephen Kinnock and Helen Goodman have also been in talks with officials in the cabinet office to discuss how Britain can best negotiate a withdrawal from the bloc.

In response to the scathing attack, a spokesman for the Government, said: “The role of the civil service is to deliver the Government's policy.

“That's what it did in the run up to the referendum and it will now support the Government, and the new Prime Minister when appointed, in carrying forward the clear decision of the British people to leave the European Union and set a new direction for the country."
