WARNING: This article contains spoilers from the sixth season of the show.

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have finally spoken about the fate of Westeros' beloved blacksmith Gendry, played by Joe Dempsie.

When fans last saw the character, he was broken out of jail in Dragonstone by Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham) and sent on his way back to King's Landing back in season three.

Although he didn't have a clue how to use a rowing boat, having spent pretty much all of his life working by a hot furnace, Gendry appeared to make his way back to the capital.

Now, both creators of the HBO drama have revealed what's befallen the unacknowledged, illegitimate son of King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy).

Speaking to the UFC unfiltered podcast, Dan, 45, said: “He’s still rowing”, while David, also 45, added: “Yes, he’s still rowing. It’s a long, a very long—”

Dan joked: “He’s coming up on Florida.”

“He’s getting in great shape. Think of the shape he’s in after rowing for four seasons," quipped David.

It appears that actor Joe, 29, agreed with the writing pair and even wrote on Twitter recently: “Still rowin'…#GoT,” in reference to his character’s storyline.

His comment led to a flurry of Game of Thrones fans creating memes to poke fun at his character’s unsolved plotline.

The Skins actor later followed up with another post in which he said: “…Life is but a meme. #GoT.”

While Gendry’s fate still remains unknown, viewers were given some answers to characters who had gone AWOL.

It was revealed that Benjen Stark (Joseph Mawle) had been killed by the White Walkers before being resurrected to help his nephew Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) fulfil his destiny as the Three-Eyed Crow.

Meanwhile, Rickon Stark (Art Parkinson) made a brief comeback before becoming a pawn in Ramsay Bolton’s (Iwan Rheon) game and getting struck down on the battlefield.

Wildling Osha (Natalia Tena) was also captured along with Rickon by the Bolton men, and she too met a sticky end at the hands of Ramsay.
