THERESA May has been compared to Angela Merkel and even Adolf Hitler after being pictured making this hand gesture.

The incoming Prime Minister was snapped imitating the 'Merkel diamond' while giving a speech outside the Palace of Westminster yesterday.

The gesture – a trademark of the German Chancellor – involves Ms Merkel pressing her thumbs and index fingers together to create a diamond.

Twitter users were quick to point out the similarities, with some even posting pictures of crazed Nazi dictator Hitler making the same gesture.

Politician Memet Killic, from Germany's Green Party, wrote: "Merkel now has found a hand gesture competitor in Theresa May."

Garion Coyote took a further dig at Mrs May by replying: "Both can compete for the s***test hairstyle among heads of state."

And journalist Tilo Jung compared her to Ms Merkel's closest ally. He branded her the "British version of Thomas de Maiziere on crack".

Ms Merkel, who has led the Christian Democratic Union party for 16 years, explained the reason she makes the unusual gesture in a 2013 interview.

She told a German magazine: "There was always the question, what to do with your arms, and that's how it came about. It contains a certain symmetry."

Other famous faces including Gordon Brown, the Duchess of Cornwall and Recep Tayyip Erdogan have also been spotted making the 'Merkel diamond'.

David Cameron haired his his final Cabinet meeting as Prime Minister this morning as May mulls over who to appoint to her top team.

Mrs May posed for photos as she arrived at 10 Downing Street in her trademark kitten heels on the day before she moves into the famous address.

After presenting herself as the unity candidate, she is expected to offer plum posts to leading figures from both the Remain and Leave camps from the EU referendum.
