TERRIFIED Britons trapped in Turkey because of the military coup are "seriously worried" for their safety as airstrikes continue to rock the capital, Ankara.

Holidaymaker Adele Topkaya boarded a plane to Turkey before the coup erupted, only to be greeted by absolute chaos when her plane landed.

All Turkish airports are reportedly closed and gunfire and explosions have been heard at Istanbul's Ataturk airport.

She is calling for the Foreign Office to issue a statement explaining how Britons can be evacuated from the country.

Adele, from South Lincolnshire, said: "We arrived at Antalya airport this evening and were not aware of anything until we arrived at the hotel.

"My husband is Turkish and realise straight away that something was wrong.

"We are unsure what to do and have just heard that parliament has been bombed three times in the last ten minutes we feel like we want to leave and get back to the UK right away.

She added: "We are really worried for our safety and what will happen next.

"There is no one in the hotel to seek advise from at the moment and we are looking on the foreign office web site."

Another British citizen, James Cambridge, is also stranded in Turkey.

He said: "We're really worried as to how we'll get home on Sunday. We're hearing airports have been locked down and there's nothing official being fed to us here — there's total panic and confusion.

"I'm hearing special forces have apparently contained the military officials responsible for the attempted overthrow of the government which sounds like good news for us in terms of getting home but nothing is official, it's very unclear."
