Breaking news: Queen has passed away

Queen Anne of Romania, also known by her Romanian name Ana, died on Monday afternoon at the Morges Hospital in Switzerland, aged 92, the Press Office of Romania's King Mihai announces.

"Keeping watch over the queen until her last breath were Their Royal Highnesses Crown Princess Margareta and Prince Radu, Princess Elena, Princess Sofia and Princess Maria. His Majesty King Mihai I kept coming to see the queen in the hospital each day over the last week. One day previously, Queen Anne received the last rites from the priest of the Catholic St. Mary's of Morges Church," the statement says.

It also says the detailed schedule of Anne's funeral will be unveiled on Tuesday.

According to the royal funeral traditions of Romania, Queen Anne's body will be laid in state for one day in the Hall of Honour of Peles Castle, then for another day at the Throne Hall in the Royal Palace in Bucharest. The burial will take place in the new Archbishopric and Royal Cathedral of Curtea de Arges.

The last royal funeral in Romania occurred on July 24, 1938, when Queen Maria was laid to rest. Upon King Mihai I's request, the funeral of Queen Anne will follow the tradition of her forerunners.

The Royal Family will decree seven days of great mourning after the funeral and 40 days of mourning thereafter.

A condolence book will simultaneously open on Tuesday at Peles Castle, the Royal Palace in Bucharest on Victoriei Road and Elisabeta Palace. They will be available to the public for 40 days after the day of death.
