Gatlin fastest, Bolt fourth in 100m heats

Justin Gatlin was the fastest qualifier in the men's 100m round heats in Rio on Saturday, while defending champion Usain Bolt cruised into the semi-finals as well.

American Gatlin comfortably won heat 2 in a time of 10.01s, while Jamaican world record holder Bolt won heat 7 with a time of 10.07.

Bolt's time was only good enough for fourth place overall, with Ben Youssef Meite of Ivory Coast posting a 10.03 to win heat 5 and qualify in second place, and Canada's Andre De Grasse winning heat 4 in 10.04s to finish third.

Bolt is no doubt saving something in the tank for the business end of the competition, however.

The 100m semi-finals take place in the early hours of Monday morning, with the medal race taking place shortly after.
