Prince William to grill Merkel in historic ‘Brexit date’

Prince William and Angela Merkel will discuss Brexit when they meet for the first time this evening

The Duke of Cambridge will attend an evening gala in Dusseldorf, where he will meet Mrs Merkel before giving a speech about the role of the British Forces in Germany.

While only expected to spend a brief time alone together, Brexit will be right at the top of the list of discussion for the pair, who will be meeting for the first time.

Prince William, 34, like the rest of the Royal Family, remained tight-lipped regarding his view on Brexit in the lead up to June’s in-out vote.

Despite some Remain campaigners claiming he endorsed staying in the EU while giving a speech this spring, he has always remained unwaveringly neutral.

Merkel fought desperately against Brexit in the lead-up to the referendum
In the speech to British diplomats at the Foreign Office he had said: “In an increasingly turbulent world, our ability to unite in common action with other nations is essential.

“It is the bedrock of our security and prosperity and is central to your work.”

However, Kensington Place ferociously denied this was a rallying call for Remain, stating: “This speech was not about Europe. He does not mention the word Europe once.”
Prince William will want to ensure Mrs Merkel helps facilitate a quick and easy divorce between the UK and the EU — while maintaining the two countries strong links, as reflected by his visit.

The Duke will be in Dusseldorf to meet the Chancellor but also to celebrate the long and proud history of British Forces Germany (BFG).

A spokesman for Kensington Palace said: “For almost 70 years, a large British military presence has remained in the region – known as British Forces Germany – playing a vital role during the Cold War and in the reconstruction of its area of occupation.
