UK urged to take in 400 refugee children from Calais ‘Jungle’

Mail on Sunday journalist, Ben Ellery, 32, and photographers Steve Burton and John McLellan were rushed to hospital for treatment following the accident.

Ellery was left needing eight stitches after suffering a gash on his head, McLellan suffered deep cuts to his face while Burton had a gash on his head and severe bruising on his back.

They were in Calais investigating reports of a bout of violence in the migrant camps.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd issued a statement after the attack, calling it: ‘extremely concerning’.
She added: ‘It’s vital that people feel safe when using the Channel ports. This shows just how it is in all our interests to combat attempts to enter the UK illegally.’
This new development puts the lives of thousands of British families using ferries and the Channel Tunnel at risk as they return from their summer holidays.

 

The scene on the E15 dual carriageway near the jungle migrant camp on the road heading for the ferry port in Calais.  At 03:20hrs this morning a large and heavy trunk of wood was hurled out of the darkness by two or three men - presumed to be migrants, at a car driven by Mail on Sunday Reporter Ben Ellery with photographers Steve Burton in the back and John McLellan in the front.  Ellery was forced to swerve violently into the path of an oncoming lorry about to overtake Ellery. Both vehicles collided.  When the two vehicles finally stopped.  Police were again very quickly on the scene and all occupants escaped with gashes, cuts and bruises.
