Right-wing extremist shoots four police officers during raid on his home

Four police officers have been shot by a right-wing radical during a search on his home.
Some of them have been seriously injured in the shooting by the 49-year-old gunman who calls himself a ‘Reichsburger’.

They are people who do not recognise the Federal Republic of Germany and want the borders of the Third Reich to be recognised.

He shot at officers in Georgensgmund, Bavaria, early this morning while police were searching for weapons.

Media reports said officers returned fire and the man was slightly wounded and taken into custody.

Reichsbürger members recognise no courts or authorities of the modern day German state and are linked through Internet chat forums and right-wing associations.

Joachim Herrmann, the Bavarian interior minister, will give more details about the injuries sustained by the officers and the police operation later in the day.
A unit of anti-terror sek officers were on hand at the scene but the suspect took the regular police unit by surprise.

Authorities have increasingly warned in recent months that neo-Nazis in the country are becoming increasingly militarised and prepared to use violence in their opposition to the country’s asylum policy for refugees.

It is understood the Bavarian gunman had a licence to keep arms but had become increasingly erratic in recent months and police feared he was a danger to the public.
