Pierce Brosnan recently revived his interpretation of James Bond for an embarrassing ad campaign to promote an Indian product.
Now he has apologised for his involvement in the endorsement — not because the whole thing was a cringe-y mess, but because the product in question is said to be a major cause of cancer in India!
In a statement released to People, Brosnan said: "As a man who has spent decades championing women's healthcare and environmental protection, I was distressed to learn of Pan Bahar's unauthorized and deceptive use of my image to endorse their range of pan masala products.
"I would never have entered into an agreement to promote a product in India that is dangerous to one's health."
Pan Bahar, also called pan masala, is a mixture that's chewed, but is said to cause bad breath, red coloured spit, addiction and throat and lung cancer — similar to the effects of smoking, which celebrities no longer endorse like they used to.
Brosnan also states that in his contract it said he was promoting a breath freshener/tooth whitener made from all natural ingredients, and that he had been grossly manipulated.
"Having endured, in my own personal life, the loss of my first wife and daughter as well as numerous friends to cancer," the statement continues, "I am fully committed to supporting women's healthcare and research programs that improve human health and alleviate suffering.
"I shall endeavor to rectify this matter. In the meantime, please accept my sincerest and heartfelt apologies to all whom I have offended."
