An American journalist was shot by a police officer while she interviewed a man at a peaceful protest.

Erin Schrode was struck by the rubber bullet while she was covering the pipeline protest in North Dakota, which has received international attention.

Protesters demonstrate at the Gallivan Center in Salt Lake City in support of the Standing Rock Sioux against the Dakota Access Pipeline, Monday, Oct. 31, 2016. Following the rally, the diverse group of over 100 marched half a block to the Wells Fargo Center building, where they held a protest in the lobby. Wells Fargo is one of several major banks financing the pipeline.

The shooting was captured live on camera while Ms Schrode broadcasted from the protest site.

Shocking footage, which some viewers may find distressing, shows her recoiling in pain after being hit in the lower back, while a woman asks if she is ok.
In a Facebook post about the incident, she wrote: ‘I woke up this morning with the thought that I may have that very footage – and broke down in reliving the 40-second horror before my own eyes.
