NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France made headlines in March with his personal endorsement of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

France told The Associated Press that the endorsement was his and his alone, not on behalf of NASCAR. That didn’t stop Trump, though, from claiming that he had NASCAR’s support at ensuing rallies, including one in Charlotte, N.C.

It all seemed folly — until Trump won Nov. 9's presidential election.

Trump didn’t just blithely accept France’s endorsement — he compared France to investor Carl Icahn and suggested he would “put the NASCAR guru in charge of trade relations with Japan,” NBC Sports reported.

Trump is a political outsider, but he developed a huge following because of his tough talk and because many believe he has the business acumen and background to run the country. Despite numerous controversial statements, Trump built a winning coalition with his radical conservative positions.

Along with France, current and former NASCAR drivers legends Bill Elliott and Mark Martin pledged support and attended Trump rallies. Current drivers joined the candidate's followers. Trump's campaign also sponsored a Truck Series entry at Talladega and a Sprint Cup car at Texas in November races.
