Brave pilot lands shaky plane sideways in middle of Storm Angus’ heavy winds

Storm Angus has been wreaking absolute havoc with those of us on the ground – so imagine flying a plane through it?

An incredibly skilled pilot in charge of an Emirates A380 aircraft was filmed successfully landing his plane through tough winds, using the so-called ‘crab’ technique.

As the name suggests, this involves creeping the plane sideways through crosswinds in order to track the runway centreline, until the pilot manages to land the plane on the runway.

Plane lands on RUNWAY after trained pilot successfully completes manoeuvre in the way he has done for many, many years

In the footage, captured by Jerry Taha Productions, the massive Emirates plane approaches the runway from the side at Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport.

But don’t worry – while those of you who are afraid of flying may be trying to hold the vomit down right now, heavy crosswinds are actually a fairly everyday occurrence for pilots – and they’re trained especially to deal with them.

Steven Draper, from British Airline Pilots’ Association (Balpa), told MailOnline that landing in heavy crosswinds or turbulence ‘goes beyond the capabilities of the aeroplane’s automatic pilot’.

This is why pilots do specific training to land in such weather, learning tricks like the ‘crab technique’ seen in this video.
Phew.
