Taylor Swift quietly drops first new material in two years

She’s back!

After disappearing from view following her Snapchat showdown with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian earlier in the year, Taylor Swift quietly put out her first new material since 2014 on Friday.

The R&B slow jam “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” (available through iTunes and Apple Music) is a duet with ex-One Direction member Zayn Malik and is lifted from the forthcoming soundtrack to “Fifty Shades Darker” (due in theaters in February). The breathy ballad captures Malik singing in falsetto while both sing the lusty chorus, “I wanna keep calling your name/Until you come back home,” in unison.

Lyrically and stylistically, it takes its cue from The Weeknd’s similarly steamy “Earned It” from the 2015 “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie. While “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” doesn’t capture either Malik or Swift in especially vintage form, it’s likely to ride the movie’s coattails onto the charts.

The track was co-written and produced by Jack Antonoff — guitarist of indie-rock band fun., singer-songwriter of Bleachers, and a central collaborator on Swift’s blockbuster album “1989.” In a series of tweets, he explained how he worked with Swift (and co-writer Sam Dew) on the track for a week at his New York home, while Malik emailed vocals to them from Los Angeles.

The change of direction shouldn’t come as a total surprise for Swift fans. Rumor has it that Taylor is also quietly working on a new solo album, which may have a similarly “urban” edge.
