New Katy Perry music is on its way. The Dark Horse singer has teased fans with a preview of her new material on Instagram, just weeks after promising to express her anger over the US presidential election on her anticipated forthcoming album.
In one of the clips posted on her Instagram account, the 32-year-old singer sits in a recording studio with one of her teeth coloured in black marker as one of her new tracks with an '80s sound blares out in the background. A snippet of the lyrics includes: "Don't be scared to…" Another video features a guitarist playing along to a backing track with Perry's vocals audible.
Perry is expected to release her fourth studio album in 2017 and previously revealed she had plans to embark on a world tour to support the record.
Recent reports claimed the Roar singer had finished the album but scrapped songs so she could address the US presidential election after Donald Trump was voted into the White House over Hillary Clinton.
The pop star is a close friend of Clinton's and was a prominent supporter of the Democrat during the presidential campaign race. Hinting that her next LP would take more of a political approach, Perry told her Instagram followers earlier in December: "The last time I was in NYC was for Election Night.
"I left covered in a blanket of sadness and despair because for me, and I imagine others, the results triggered a lot of dormant fears and emotions to the surface. I feared that we were not ever going to see the light of justice or fairness. I felt vulnerable, confused and frightened like a child. It's funny, sometimes people who disagree with me just say, 'Shut up and sing'. Boy, will I do so in a whole new way… next year. Hell hath no fury like a woman REBORN."
Perry's third album, Prism, reached number one in the US and UK selling more than four million copies worldwide to date. Prism hosts the hit singles This Is How We Do, Dark Horse, Roar, Unconditionally and Birthday. Fans have not been entirely without new music from the pop star as Perry released the single Rise in July as NBC's official Rio Olympics 2016 anthem.
Addressing her songwriting process, Perry told the New York Times in February 2016: "I do my records in a more traditional way, where the cycle is three years, so that once I start writing them, I know exactly where I'll be in spring of 2018. That can get a little bit like 'Ugh'. I need a little bit more freedom, especially when I've been doing it for this long."
