It’s important to always be aware of your surroundings, not just for safety reasons, but because you truly never know what — or in this case, who — you might find.
Raul Marin Ceja was walking to work at about 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2015, when he spotted a white cloth bundle lying in the dirt near a canal. As he got closer, the man heard cries and turned on his camera, not knowing if it was a baby, an animal, or a cruel prank.
Ceja found what he is calling “a gift from God,” a newborn baby girl, so young part of her umbilical cord was still attached. In Korea, new parents can leave their unwanted newborns in a baby “drop box,” which guarantees they will be looked after, but in Mexico, there are fewer options. Obviously, leaving your newborn in the dirt to die is a terrible choice, but in this case it was a blessing in disguise.
After bringing the baby to Zapopan General Hospital and learning she is expected to make a full recovery, Ceja has decided to adopt the tiny miracle, whose birth parents have not been located. I’ve always loved how the government in Finland gives new mothers a box of necessary items so that all children have the same start in life, but after seeing this video, it’s obvious how badly women in other countries need help, too.
Regardless of whether Ceja raises the baby girl or not, I’m just so happy he was in the right place at the right time.
