TERRIFIED Britons are being left stranded in Turkey as British Airway cancels all flights amid bloody power struggle.

The cancellations come as more than 260 people have died as Turkey's military attempted to overthrow President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a coup.

British Airways said they are keeping flights to Turkey under review following a night of gunfire and explosions in capital Ankara and Istanbul.

A spokeswoman said: "In light of the events unfolding in Turkey, all flights to and from the country have been cancelled today.

"We are keeping flights to Turkey under review. The safety and security of our customers and colleagues remains our top priority at all times. For the latest flight details please refer to ba.com."

The announcement comes hour after the Foreign Office urged British nationals trapped in Turkey's military coup to stay indoors.

Significant numbers of Britons are believed to be trapped in the chaos, with more than 2,500,000 UK citizens visiting the tourist hotspot each year.

Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We are concerned by events unfolding in Ankara and Istanbul. Our Embassy is monitoring the situation closely.

"Given the current uncertainty we advise British nationals to avoid public places, remain vigilant and monitor the FCO website for travel advice.”

The Foreign Office have not confirmed if measures will be taken to evacuate British nationals.

Boris Johnson, the new Foreign Office Minister, tweeted: "Very concerned by the unfolding events in Turkey.

"Our embassy is monitoring the situation closely."

France and Russia has also issued advice to its citizens telling them to stay indoors.

Customers affected by the cancellations are being offered to rebook or a refund, while people currently booked for Sunday or Monday can rebook at no cost, subject to availability, the airline said.

One British tourist caught up in the Turkey military coup described the "terrifying" scene as he fled for safety.

Daniel Worley, 22, from Kingsthorpe in Northamptonshire, said he and friend Gemma Errington were forced to lock themselves in their hotel room in Marmaris during Friday night's failed military coup.

He said the pair were particularly concerned because they had heard embattled Mr Erdogan was staying in their resort.

Mr Worley said: "It's all over now but it was terrifying.

"We heard a helicopter over Marmaris and gunshots, we just locked ourselves in the room.

"Earlier we were sat on the balcony and could hear protesters, we panicked because we found out the president was on vacation in Marmaris."
