Brazil’s Jade Barbosa was injured in the women’s gymnastics all-around competition and was taken away in a wheelchair.

The 25-year-old Barbosa has been a crowd favorite in the Rio Games, drawing large cheers from home fans during each of her performances.

On Thursday she landed on her knees on the first tumbling pass of her floor exercise. She got up and did a few more moves before stopping and limping off the floor with what appeared to be an ankle injury. She was greeted by her coach and medical personnel, who talked to her for a couple of minutes before putting her in the wheelchair.

The crowd gave her a huge round of applause as she was wheeled away, and the roar got louder as she wiped tears from her cheek and gave a small wave to the fans.

Minutes later it was announced that she would not return to finish the competition.
