Are you ready for the biggest supermoon this century?

We’re about to see the biggest supermoon in more than 60 years – and there won’t be another until 2034.
On November 14 you might notice the sky will be much brighter than usual.

This is because the moon will be the closest to Earth it has been since 1948, and this phenomenon is called perigee.

The moon is expected to be 14% bigger and 30% brighter, making it one of the most astronomical nighttime shows of the 21st century so far, according to scientists.
And if you miss it you’ll be in for a long wait, because Nasa reckons the next supermoon won’t be for another 18 years.

The moon’s orbit is elliptical, so one side is around 30,000 miles closer to the planet than the other – and the side closest is known as perigee.
When the Earth, sun and moon line up this is called Syzygy (try pronouncing it).
Now, this is where it gets even more complicated…

When Syzygy occurs at the same time as perigee, and the moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun, it creates the supermoon.

This means Londoners will have the best chance of the supermoon later that night.
But if there are clear skies people will be able to see it throughout the day.
To get the best look – stand on a raised area once it’s dark, and bask in the glory.
There are three supermoons this year (but two are not so big)

Just to make things more confusing for you, there are actually three supermoons in 2016, but the other two will not be as epic.

On October 16 the moon became full on the same day as perigee, and this will also happen on December 14.

On November 14 the moon becomes full within two hours of perigee happening (within less time than the other two dates), and this will make it much bigger.
