The tide is turning: Surge in support for Brexit as undecided voters back leaving the EU

THE crusade to get Britain out of the EU received a huge boost tonight as the latest polling indicated undecided voters are coming down in favour of a Brexit.

A new survey published today shows the Leave camp have surged ahead of the Europhiles despite David Cameron wasting £9 million of taxpayers' money on a biased pro-Brussels propaganda pamphlet.

Crucially, the polling shows that as the number of people backing Brexit has increased the level of undecided voters has dropped off correspondingly, indicating people are starting to make their minds up in favour of severing ties with Brussels.

The survey, produced by respected pollsters ICM, shows that 45% of people now want to leave the EU compared to just 42% who want to remain.

That result represents a surge in support for Brexit in recent weeks. ICM's last poll indicated that 43% wanted to stick with Brussels and 42% to leave the EU club.

ICM's Jennifer Bottomley said: “Most polls continue to suggest that it’s a very tight contest, with neither side able to gain a decisive lead.”

The latest survey could not come at a worse time for Mr Cameron, who has endured a torrid week seen by many as his blackest in office.

At the centre of his woes has been an increasingly bitter row over the use of taxpayers' money to peddle pro-Brussels propaganda.

A petition urging the Prime Minister to scrap a £9 million leaflet surged to over 200,000 signatures in less than 48 hours. The Government ignored it and sent the pamphlets out this week, but has been humiliated as the public reacted by defacing them, burning them and sending them back to Downing Street.

Social media was awash with furious voters decrying the huge waste of money, with many observing the cash should have been put towards public services like the NHS.

As fury over the leaflet continued to mount another scandal threatened to engulf the Government — this time over the use of civil servants to prepare pro-EU propaganda.

Brexit campaigners are furious that Mr Cameron has created a crack squad of Whitehall pen-pushers solely dedicated to churning out biased Europhile material at a time of swingeing public sector cuts.

Today the Government drafted in a fresh batch of bureaucrats to beef up its propaganda division, which has been likened to the Soviet Union’s Pravda newspaper.

Eurosceptic MP David Davis said: “We were promised by the Government they would play fair, but it is becoming increasingly evident they will do anything to stitch up this vote in their favour.

“The Government is ripping up the rule book because it knows Remain is losing the key arguments on whether Britain should be ruled by unelected Brussels bureaucrats or become a free and independent country once again.

“If Remain gets £10m to spend on a leaflet and a big army of taxpayer funded civil servants to pump out pro-EU propaganda, then the Leave side should be given the same advantages. Nothing else would be fair.

"It is vital that the Government allows this debate to be conducted in a free and fair manner – or the British people will never forgive them."
