UMPIRE Paul Emmel was a ‘bloody mess’ as walked off to a standing ovation during the Los Angeles Angels and Oakland Athletics MLB game at Angels Stadium.
Not that the home plate official would remember much about it as he was being helped off after getting hit in the head by a flying bat.
Emmell was felled after LA pinch-hitter Jefry Marte lost the grip on his bat after swinging and missing at a pitch.
It slammed into the poor umpire’s head, who then stumbled backwards, fell to the ground and began bleeding profusely.
Two Angels’ trainers rushed to Emmel’s aid and applied a towel to stem the flow of blood from the gaping wound.
