USC and New York Jets running back Joe McKnight was shot and killed in what has been reported to be a “road rage incident” near New Orleans Thursday.

Joe McKnight of the New York Jets poses for his NFL headshot circa 2011 in Florham Park, New Jersey.

According to an unnamed witness who saw the encounter at an intersection in Terrytown, La., the shooter was yelling at McKnight who was trying to apologize. The man then shot McKnight, “stood over him” and said, “I told you don’t you fuck with me” before shooting him again, The Times-Picayune reports.

Police identified the shooter as Ronald Gasser, who stayed at the crime scene and turned his gun over to authorities when they arrived. Gasser told police McKnight did not have a gun, and police did not find one outside of the vehicle where he was killed.

Gasser was later taken into custody and questioned on Thursday. He was released later that night from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office without being formally charged, The Times-Picayune reported early Friday morning.

Other football players were shocked and saddened by the tragic news Thursday. Many have expressed their grief on social media.

The investigation into McKnight’s death is still ongoing.
